New top-level domain coming, business and trademark issues arise


ICANN, The internet corporation for assigned names and numbers, has revealed the
applications they have received for new geris top-level domains. In what will be the biggest
charge to the structure of the web since its inception, companies are now allowed to apply
for any top-level domain they like, in addition to the standard .com and .net. Hundreds
of companies have applied for their own trademarks, including the Tata group Mahindra,
reliance, and even the government of India with its request for bearcat. Several businesses
have also sprouted aiming to sell websites with TLDs of common terms such as late, movie
now racing and hundreds more Indian firm Direct has applied or 31 such Gelds, including
space world press, baby and hotel Companies that are wary of trademark infringement
and are willing to pay for their own names include prudential Olympus, deutshepost Cisco
brother, Nissan and theruardian. It isn’t known whiter they will develop these into new
websites or simply sit on them to protect against stander. Google has applied for 1401
gelds and rival web giant Amazon has applied for 76. There are 21 overlaps between the
tow.

1,930 applications were made in all, icon is currently accepting defensive arguments
against allotting any of the application, and the entire process will take several more
months.
