A group of recently laid off Nokia engineers have announced plans to rescue what they can of
the abandoned MeeGo operating system. The group calls itself Jolla, and has already signed
up a partner in China to distribute its first products. Jolla plans to have two smartphones ready
within a year, but will be unable to support Nokia’s N9, which was the only MeeGo phone ever
to be released. The group is motivated by the promise they see in MeeGo and the positive
reactions the N9 earned even though it was never adequately supported or promoted by Nokia.
MeeGo was supposed to replace Maemo as Nokia’s high-end OS.
