It looks as though Microsoft has taken its Metro design philosophy to heart-the new MS Office
looks nothing like a program we’re all used to. The Windows 8 influence is everywhere, from
the solid patches of color to the flattened ribbon and sharp corners that the new visual style
dictates. The programs let you turn on a “touch mode” that spaces out all on-screen controls.
On touch- screen devices you’ll be able to pinch to zoom and swipe to scroll. The other notable
departure from convention is that you’ll need to be signed into a Live account all the time,
and files are by default saved to your SkyDrive storage space instead of the hard drive. In
terms of functionality, Word can now edit PDF files and has threaded comments when tracking
changes. Excel recommends the best chart for your data and animates it. Outlook comes with
a rearranged blue interface and pop-up previews, and OneNote supports finger, stylus and
mouse input.
